[EIEIEI]

In 2024 there was a secret egg themed Open Air Event in Aachen with the title 'EIEIEI'. I got the opportunity to projection map a huge fiberglass Egg sculputure which also included the dj booth.

I created an audioreactive visualizer in TouchDesigner centered around a dancing egg illustrated by Fabi Gunti. Because the Egg was painted in a very saturated yellow, it barely reflected any blue light and I was limited in the colors I could use.

Because the event started during the day, the projection was only gonna become visible after the sun had set. Nobody also knew or expected that this was gonna happen. For the big reveal I hand animated a little intro of the egg cracking, which sadly wasn't perfectly aligned anymore with the top half of the egg. This actually was a big challenge, because the projection wasn't visible at all during the day and there was no way for me to check the alignement before or during the event, without spoiling the suprise.

I learned a lot about projection mapping during this project and the video above shows some of the moments I had a bit of fun trying things.

Because I used a 3D scan of the Egg for Projection Mapping, the textures could be mapped with almost no distortion. I also got very intersting results projection mapping virtual light sources, aswell as using physically based rendering materials to create a surreal effect of structure and depth.
